Lewis Gossett Jr. passes away
Louis Gossett Jr., the first black actor to win an Oscar for his supporting role in ‘An Officer and a Gentleman,’ died Thursday night in Santa Monica. Gossett’s nephew informed the Associated Press of Louis Gossett’s death. Brooklyn-born Lewis also received an Emmy Award in 1977 for his role in the miniseries Roots, based on the novel by Alex Haley.

Louis Cameron Gossett Jr. was born on May 27, 1936, in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York City. He made his stage debut at the age of 17. His mother Helen was a nurse and his father Louis Gossett Sr. was a porter. He was first cast in a role in the 1953 Broadway version of Take a Giant Step.

In 1961, Gossett made his cinematic debut in the film adaptation of A Raisin in the Sun. Lewis is known for the films ‘An Officer and a Gentleman’, ‘Enemy Mine’ (1985), ‘And Iron Eagle (1986). Apart from this, he is also known for his strong acting in the series ‘Extent’, ‘Madam Secretary’ (2014), ‘Psych’ (2012), ‘ER’ (2009), and ‘The Spoils Before Dying’ (2015).
Cause of death of Oscar-winning actor
Veteran actor Louis Gossett Jr. has died at the age of 87. The cause of death is unknown, but Gossett announced in 2010 that he had prostate cancer. Gossett’s nephew informed the Associated Press about Lewis’ death.
